Genre: Legal Thriller / Crime
Criminal Intent is a gripping legal thriller that dives deep into faith, hypocrisy, and the dark secrets that hide behind stained-glass windows. William Bernhardt takes readers on a tense ride as attorney Ben Kincaid defends a priest accused of murder and in the process uncovers a web of lies, forbidden desires, and shocking betrayal.
🧩 Plot Summary
Helen seeks forgiveness in church, burdened by sin but before she can speak the truth, she’s murdered. Her death sets off a chain of events in Father Daniel Beale’s parish, where loyalties fracture and secrets burst to the surface.
Ben Kincaid, once helped by Father Beale as a child, now becomes his defense attorney. Father Beale stands trial not just in a court of law, but in the court of public opinion accused of murder, moral corruption, and violating the sanctity of his calling.
As bodies begin to pile up including one found in Beale’s office fingerprints, motive, and scandal appear to point straight at the priest. But nothing in this church is holy anymore.
Behind the choir songs and prayers lurks:
- Wife-swapping disguised as “lifestyle couples”
- Abuse of authority inside a sacred space
- Manipulation, betrayal, and guilt twisted into devotion
What starts as a murder case becomes a revelation of spiritual decay and moral depravity.
And then comes the biggest shock:
The killers are revealed to be two fifteen-year-old church choristers Judy and Maura. Innocent faces hiding chilling intent. The justice system falters, the truth gets buried, and power protects itself.
💠My Thoughts
Bernhardt doesn’t just tell a crime story, he pulls back the curtain on human weakness and the misuse of faith.
The idea of a priest encouraging wife swapping? Disturbing and sadly believable in a world where power is often abused. It felt more like spiritual manipulation and sexual coercion than “freedom.” What should have been a house of God quickly becomes a house of horrors.that harms others isn’t
I appreciated how Bernhardt shows the danger of blind faith and the fragility of institutions we assume are pure. The twist revealing teenage girls as killers was shocking and heartbreaking. Innocence corrupted by the very place meant to protect it.
